Apparel:

You may want your baby to look smart but remember that practical clothes are more useful than smart clothes. Your baby's skin is very soft and tender so his clothes should also be made of soft material.

a. Baby suits: Buy at least one dozen cotton suits for your baby. Many kinds of baby suits are available in the market. Some are whole body suits which can be zipped up but you have to be careful to protect your baby's skin from the zipper. You can buy shirts and pyjamas separately but then you will have to take care that your baby's stomach is not exposed. Your objective should be that the baby does not feel cold or is very warm. In summers buy thin cotton clothes.

b. Undershirts: An undershirt protects your baby from extremes of weather and gives it a nice feeling. One dozen cotton undershirts are absolutely necessary. You can get a slip-on type of undershirt as also one that is tied from the side. The latter type is more convenient.

c. Sweaters: Sweaters give extra warmth. They can be worn either over other clothes or under other clothes. Make sure that neck opening is large enough and there are buttons and zippers to keep the cold out.

d. Bunting: A bunting is a zippered bag, covering the baby up to his shoulders. It is very useful in cold weather.

e. Other clothes: Always cover your babies ears with knitted acrylic or cotton caps when going out or even indoors in cold weather. Booties and stockings are required for babies who have learnt to sit or walk. Don't use clothes that are rough and will scratch your baby's skin. Some times hand-me-downs are best for a new born baby because they are soft and of the correct size (Many first time parents can not judge the size of their baby.)
